JUDGES SELECT WINNERS IN DESIGN AGAINST FUR'S CANADIAN ROUND

On Monday, 17 May the judges for the Canadian leg of the 2004 Design Against Fur Poster competition met in Toronto to evaluate submissions that came in from all over Canada.

With over a hundred poster submissions to evaluate, they had their work cut out for them.

This year, Design Against Fur was lucky to have an excellent array of very qualified judges from the graphic design, communications, media and fashion fields.

Steffi Black, former host of Global television’s "Style File" and now Marketing VP for St Peter's, Valerie Gibson, columnist with the Toronto Sun, David Kelso, Creative Director of MacLaren McCann, and Ron Smrczak of Taxi Design all put their extensive expertise together to come up with the winning designs for 2004.

The high quality and number of entries proved challenging for the judges and they only arrived at their top choices after hours of deliberation.

"I would have loved the opportunity to have worked with some of the students to push some of their already great ideas even further," commented Dave Kelso from MacLaren McCann. "That being said, there was some well crafted and well thought out work."

Fellow judge, Valerie Gibson cut to the heart of the matter with her summation of the contest entries: "A great response from some very talented and creative students who have learned about the obscene cruelty of fur fashion."

And now for the final decision. Global Action Network and the Fur Free Alliance are pleased to announce that the following students took top honours in the Canadian Design Against Fur competition for 2004. Congratulations, both to the winners and everyone else who took the time to submit an entry!

• 1st Place - $1000 – Michael Blain from Conestoga College in Kitchener
• 2nd Place - $500 – Jessica Pensabene of York University in Toronto
• 3rd - $250 – Laurent Konyalian of College Salette in Montreal
