Ana Muriel, Batley School of Art & Design (1st prize):
'To win anything is a great feeling, but to win first prize with a heart-felt project that fights for a cause that I can really believe in is most satisfying.

'With my entry for the "Design Against Fur" campaign I wanted to make everybody think, to send a message that would stay with people longer than just the shock of a violent or bloodied seal image. This shock treatment has become an over-used cliché. We are bombarded by these types of messages and we have become immune to these tactics. I think you have to sneak inside people's defences and make them think. Regardless of the design approach, if animals—as our partners on this planet—are in peril, then we are too. I will go on to campaign until we all get the message.

'My hope for the future is to become involved with, and to specialise in, issue based graphics campaigns. I did not undertake a return to college as a mature student to study graphic design as an optimum route to wealth; it was to bring together a passion for design with meaningful and wholesome work. I want to feel my work is making a difference and that it aspires towards something of lasting value.

'Winning the Design Against Fur competition was a fitting end to my HND at Dewsbury College. It was altogether a most challenging and exhilarating experience, and I would like to thank my college tutors for their help in achieving this final recognition of my work.'

Thomas Young, Somerset College of Art & Technology (2nd prize):
'The experience was exciting. It was the first competition brief I'd done, and it was for a worthy cause, which gave an extra incentive for some strong ideas.

'I entered the competition to boost my portfolio and also giving something to the Design Against Fur campaign, and representing my college was very important.'

Chris Noakes, Somerset College of Art & Technology (3rd prize):
'This was a really interesting brief to be involved with, and I would like to thank my tutor Jane Kelly for providing me with the opportunity to be involved in a project with such a great cause.

'In all honesty I was unaware of the scale and horrific nature of the slaughter of seals in Canada before this project, it certainly raised awareness to me, and most of my classmates. I would also like to thank everyone at Respect for Animals for providing my college with this brief. I look forward to tackling the next one!'

Vicky Skelton, Hull College (Persula Foundation Award):
'I'm very happy to have been given this opportunity and pleased my poster has influenced others in helping protect seals.'
