MTV's Coltrane Curtis Host Design Against Fur "Protect Seals" Awards Reception, May 2, 2006
MTV'S Coltrane Curtis Hosts Design Against Fur "Protect Seals" With Todd Oldham, David Carson, Milton Glaser, Karim Rashid, Mickey Boardman To End Canadian Seal Hunt Announce 2006 Winning Design & Awards Reception
NEW YORK, NY (April 28, 2006)—The Fur Free Alliance (FFA) announce the winners of Design Against Fur 2006 (DAF) global graphic design competition for the United States:
1st Place & Todd Oldham Award: Anastasia Cohen, Miami International University of Art & Design (Florida)
2nd Place: Yu-Tzu Chung, Pratt Institute (New York)
3rd Place: Ramon Aclo Tyler School of Art/Temple University (Pennsylvania)
David Carson Award: Rachel Aubrey, New York Institute of Technology-Manhattan Campus (New York).
MTV's Coltrane Curtis will host the fourth annual DAF awards reception with highly acclaimed designers Todd Oldham, David Carson, Milton Glaser and Karim Rashid on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 from 6:30-8:30PM at FreeSTYLE, 676 Broadway, between Great Jones & Bond Street. This is a closed event. Members of the media who wish to attend, contact STATE PR Ryan Urcia at 917.291.0848 or ryan@statepr.com for accreditation.
"Protect Seals" is the theme of this year's international graphic and arts design competition with over 2,000 college students participating around the world, presented by the FFA, which includes the Animal Protection Institute (API), The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). College students from around the world are united in one cause—to design a poster representative of the perils of the fur industry and the commitment to the protection of the Canadian seals, while nourishing and promoting creative and compassionate expression. Other personalities that have passionately spoken out against the seal hunt include ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson and Morrissey.
"Killing for vanity is a very sad state of affairs. No matter how you feel about vegetarianism or the meat industries, it is very hard to feel OK with these senseless, cruel and cowardly murders. Any effort that causes people to consider the sad plight of so many animals whom are raised for vanity businesses brings great awareness and growth possibilities"—Todd Oldham
"That we still hunt and beat to death harmless, unprotected seals in this day and age is indefensible. This poster event is an excellent opportunity for young designers to see that they CAN have an impact on important issues, that they CAN use their unique voice, combined with their unique vision to create something infinitely more important than, say, new packaging for toothpaste, energy drinks, or motor oil cans."—David Carson
The theme of the DAF competition, "Protect Seals" is aimed to bring awareness to the annual Canadian seal hunt to the youth of the world and to display their posters as a message to the global community. This year, close to 310,000 seals have been killed for their pelt and continues through May in Newfoundland, Canada or until the quota of 325,000 harp seals are met. Sealers target pups as soon as they have begun to molt—as young as 12 days old, who are shot or clubbed to death, an archaic form of killing the baby seal pups. Although "out of fashion" since 1972 in the US, seal fur is exported mainly to Europe for their "non-bulky" style for the body conscious consumer as well as seal penises for their aphrodisiac properties to China and Asia.
The contest is open to all college students of fashion, design, fine arts, advertising, marketing, graphic design multi-media, and other disciplines to be judged by a group of celebrated individuals in the design and advertising fields. This year's judges for the United States are: Todd Oldham, Milton Glaser, David Carson, Karim Rashid, Mickey Boardman, David Swajeski & Erik Vaughn (Location 8) and Conway Williamson & Michael Haje (Lodge 212). The DAF deadline for submission is April 3, 2006 and the finalists will be determined by April 9, 2006. The first prize-winner will receive US$ 1,000, second prize US$ 500, third prize US$ 250, and 25 honorable mentions. Todd Oldham will also present a special prize Todd Oldham Award for Creativity to a student design poster. The finalists will also be automatically entered into the International Competition where the Grand Prize Winner will be announced and receive US $5,000 plus an all expense paid trip to Stella McCartney's Fashion Show during Paris Fashion Week 2006 and who's poster will be considered for campaign use by any of the members of the FFA.
